A lil photo journal of my Melbourne trip
A K-pop concert, street art, Melbourne Museum, and Artvo optical illusions
A departure in format for this week’s newsletter, since I spent most of my days in Melbourne and didn’t get a whole lot of time to write reviews or follow news.
In case you’re curious, the podcasts I ended up listening to from last week’s ‘Raves and Faves’ were the two episodes I mentioned of The New Yorker: Fiction featuring stories by Shirley Jackson and Margaret Atwood, along with the Shrink the Box episode about Walter White in Breaking Bad. I also tried Scam Goddess, but couldn’t get into it.
My five days over there went fast. The first few days were boiling, but a change came in just in time for the concert Friday evening, which was wonderful, as I was dreading queueing in 37-degree heat. Anyway, here’s a handful of snaps of our escapades.
First off the mark, of course pretty much the first thing I did after I stepped off the plane was to stumble into the State Library of Victoria. Of course. You can take the book nerd out of Adelaide… This little felt replica was inside the children’s section and I thought it was mega-sweet.
Thursday we ventured to the Melbourne Museum and I was mesmerised by the multi-coloured gemstones, especially this glowing display. We also enjoyed the dinosaur display and the Mini Mega Model Museum, among other wonders.
I’m a street art devotee at the best of times, but I was extra keen to visit Melbourne CBD’s designated graffiti alley, Hosier Lane, on this trip since there were a couple of Stray-Kids-themed artworks, including this fab piece. That night, we met some new friends at a Korean BBQ dinner and then went out for shaved ice desserts.
The next day was all about preparing for that night’s concert. We went for a tiny excursion to the K-pop store, Happy Town, and I scored this T-shirt, so I felt like I was properly in the concert-going spirit. My friend then attacked me with glitter and this is the result.
One of my best snaps from the concert — loving the lens flare effect on the left. My favourite members of this group are the left-most dude, who is the Stray Kids leader, Bang Chan (one of the two members who grew up in Australia), and the fifth from the left — the blondie looking down, Han.
On the last day, the highlight was going to ArtVo in the Docklands precinct. This is one of the best photos of me — recreating a scene from Studio Ghibli animated film, My Neighbour Totoro. I plan to be peppering my Instagram with further trip photos in the next week or so, if you are keen to see what else I got up to. An awesome time overall, though. This was my first trip outside of South Australia since the pandemic began, and boy had I missed travelling. Now I’m wrecked and may take forever to regain my energy, but that’s a different story, haha.
